Sunshine Leaders: Try @ the Y
Awesome to see the success of a USAT – Florida Region program and a USA Triathlon key initiative! Thanks to the hard work of Sunshine Leader, Zoe Da Silva and Program Leader, Lacey Chimienti. #Womenwhoshine
On Saturday 14th October, 19 ladies lined up at the start line of Boca Raton’s first ever ladies only Triathlon at the Peter Blum Family YMCA. For 15 of them, it was their first ever triathlon. The other 4 had completed a couple of small local events.
Some of the the ladies has their own programs to follow, but 10 of them needed assistance with their swimming, cycling or running, so embarked on a 6 week coaching course leading up to the race to prepare them for all they needed to know. We covered technique and drills in all 3 sports, transition practice and we even did a run through of the route a week before.
Race day arrived and they were ready and eager to go. The ladies were set off in 15 second increments in the pool. The swim course snaked along the lanes and the ladies swam a total of 150 yard before exiting the pool and making their way to transition. Once on the bike, they cycled 2 laps of the local neighborhood which covered 4.5 miles, with the help of the Doghouse team ensuring everyone was kept safe. After heading back into transition, the ladies took off for their run. The run course entailed a short stretch up to a local school and then returning to the YMCA for a final lap of the field where their supporters were waiting for them. The run was lead by the GO! Athletics team and as a total of 1 mile.
All in all, the ladies all tried very hard and all finished with a big smile on their faces. The accomplished so much over a short space of time. One of the ladies couldn’t even put her face in the water 6 weeks ago, and went on to finish her first ever Triathlon. I couldn’t be any prouder of them all. Well done Ladies!
